The village is located on the southwest coast of Syros in a safe natural deep harbor sheltered from the north winds. Probably the name originates from the Phoenicians who used to anchor in the harbor.

The people in the village earn their living from fishing, farming, and more recently tourism.

There is a beautiful sandy beach lined with tamarisk trees, good swimming, warm aquamarine blue water.
