The name of Syros or Syra originates from the Phoenician name Ossura or Oussyra which mean "happiness". This name illustrates the prosperous times the island had both during the last century and in ancient times.

It is situated in the heart of the Cyclades complex of islands in the Aegean Sea. It has an area of 86 sq. Km and a population of 25,000 people. The distance from Piraeus port on mainland Greece is 83 nautical miles. The capital of the island, "Hermoupolis" is a port which has regular ferry services to and from neighbouring islands, as well as a daily air service to Athens.

Syros combines both the prehistorical and classical aspects of Greek culture. The archaeological sites dating back to the early bronze age, in the north. The medievall hill town of Ano Syros with narrow cobblestone streets, a fantastic view of the harbor and the surrounding islands.
The neoclassical town of Hermoupolis with marble paved streets, grand houses, imposing churches and the marvellous Town Hall.
Beautiful seaside villages named Finikas, Possidonia, Mega-gialos, Vari, Galissas and Kini.

Many picturesque bays with clean beaches and clear blue water.
